2001 World Cup Tae Kwon Do Championships
USTA Team General Manager Hyun K. Choi
Choi's Tae Kwon Do has a deep-rooted history in the martial arts community. In 1968, Grand Master Dan K. Choi came to California from Korea to introduce the martial art of Tae Kwon Do to the United States. As one of the Bay Area's earliest Tae Kwon Do pioneers, Grand Master Dan K. Choi played a significant role in establishing and growing the art throughout the region.
In 1971, he opened Silicon Valley's first Tae Kwon Do school. Spanning decades, our school has developed numerous esteemed Black Belts including State, National and World Champions. The school's influence extends throughout the Bay Area, where many TaeKwon Do and martial arts instructors began their training under Grand Master Choi.
Among the school's notable alumni is Ernie Reyes, one of Grand Master Dan Choi's first black belts, who later founded West Coast Martial Arts. Many other students have established their own affiliated schools under the continued guidance and mentorship of Grand Master Choi.
In 1998, Grand Master Hyun K. Choi founded the United Tae Kwon Do Association (UTA) to unite all Choi's-affiliated studios under a single organization. Today, the UTA includes schools across the United States and affiliate schools in Seoul, South Korea. The association has produced hundreds of Kukkiwon accredited Black Belts.
Through its commitment to excellence in standards, tradition and character development, the UTA continues to uphold the legacy established by Grand Master Dan K. Choi and Grand Master Hyun K. Choi.
